In painting, portraits often serve to represent the portrayed person appropriately. The type of portrait often depends on the wishes of the person portrayed as well as on fashion or social status. In addition, the portrait can also be strongly influenced by the artistic idiosyncrasy of the painter. In the case of the painting shown here, the impression arises that the painter has realised himself in this and has drawn from the full. The mother's costume, reminiscent of the Renaissance, her rich jewellery, the theatrical setting as well as the strong colour tones and contrasts lead us into a world that does not exist in reality. In contrast, the depiction of the child is natural and its clothing contemporary. Herein lies the special feature of this portrait, in that it depicts the adult person quite eccentrically, but does not draw the child into this sphere.
